CHARLANE
PLANTATION NEWSLETTER
May, 2005
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Charlane Plantation newsletter, No. 6! This issue will include seasonal update information, keep you abreast of recent changes, and make sure everyone knows what's happening here at the Plantation. We want to thank all of our Charlane Plantation patrons and friends for making last year’s hunting season a success. Here is an update of what you can look forward to at Charlane for the ‘05/06 seasons.
- Mike Hattaway, Manager for Charlane Plantation
- Mike Hattaway, manager for Charlane Plantation, can answer your questions concerning hunting opportunities, rates and availabilities. He can be reached at 478-945-3939 or charlanemanager@mindspring.com.
Forestland Improvement We planted over 135 acres of loblolly and longleaf pine in the ‘03/04 planting season on Charlane. These areas have created some great hunting opportunities this season for deer, turkey and quail. We added several new areas for large feed plots, and as a result, we have the best habitat we’ve ever had. We also planted several hundred Sawtooth Oak trees. This past hunting season and early this season we began to use some of the new courses that were created after the last timber harvest. Charlane is more beautiful than ever, and the habitat is much improved for the wildlife and the forests. We are truly blessed!
Mike has planted plenty of feed plots and strips for the this season, including sorgam alum, Egyptian wheat, sudan grass, corn, chuffa and other goodies. The plots came up nicely with the good rains we’ve had. The prescribed burns we performed in March and April of ‘05 have created some of the best habitats we've seen at Charlane. The predator control program that we implemented a several years back has made a huge difference in keeping the bird population strong and plentiful. This program has shown us great results, and we now practice year-round control of excess predators. The 2005-06 season should prove to be our best ever for the habitat of our native birds!
Turkey Season
Turkey season has come and gone for '05. We had a great season, and the Toms are bigger and better than ever. I continued my relationship with the National Wild Turkey Federation, performing at the annual convention in Nashville, Tn. earlier this year. NWTF has done an amazing job and I value my connection to that wonderful organization.
Deer Program
We continue to practice QDM (Quality Deer Management) here at Charlane. As most of you know, the reason behind QDM is to improve the quality of the deer herds and to encourage bigger and better bucks for harvest. For anyone interested in learning more, we suggest checking with either your DNR representative or the QDM Association for more information:

The deer population is still strong here at Charlane, and we saw some big bucks during the last rut. Plantation manager Mike Hattaway has been instrumental in guiding us to better management for the deer herd, as well as the wild turkey population.
Construction of the new Lodge is complete!
Rose Lane and I are pleased to announce that we have added new accommodations at Charlane! The new lodge was constructed mostly from our own rough sawn pine lumber harvested from Charlane. With over 4,000 square feet of space, there are four bedrooms and four baths as well as a huge conference/hangout room with a nice big stone fireplace. The porches are generous, fun and functional. Along with The Bullard House, The Cottage and The Hayloft, his brings our total capacity for overnight guests to 18. Great stuff!
Conservation Activism
During the European portion of the Rolling Stones Forty Licks tour, I met with friends from the German Forest Association. They suggested that my book on forestry, "Forever Green", be translated into German. I quickly accepted the proposition, and am pleased to announce that the book is now out in Germany and Austria! Here in the US “Forever Green” is now in it’s second edition.
Evergreen Arts, Chuck's New Projects and Other News
Speaking of books, I have partnered with my friend J. Marshall Craig to pen my autobiography, “Between Rock and a Home Place”. The book was released in November of ‘04, and includes about 200 photos. Mercer University Press is the publishing partner with Evergreen Arts. In June, I went back into the studio to begin recording my new CD. I recently finished the project and enjoyed working with some great musicians: Michael Rhodes on bass, Chad Cromwell on drums and Tim Reis on sax. My old pal Randall Bramblett played on a few tunes as well, and the great guitarist Larry Carlton played on two tracks. Eric Darken added some nice percussion and Chuck Ainaly did an amazing job of engineering the project. Called “Southscape”, the all instrumental cd is a musical portrait of the South. Release is slated for Summer of ’05. Check out www.chuckleavell.com for more info on these projects and more.
As mentioned earlier, “Forever Green” is in its second edition in the US with new publishing partner Mercer University Press. A new preface by Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana, a fellow tree farmer, is a special addition.
Rosie World
Rose Lane is very active in her art endeavors, and paints beautiful pictures almost every day. She had a successful Art Show in Macon September 9-24, 2004 at Macon Arts. Stay tuned for more Rose Lane projects!
Stones Roll On
With the Forty Licks tour now history, the Stones are contemplating the future. While no announcements have been made, the band has had some meetings, and conventional wisdom is that they intend to continue rockin’. Speculation is for a new studio CD and a tour in 2005.I was called in for a week of recording with The Boys in the south of France at Mick’ estate there in late March. There will be more recording soon, and likely a tour this summer. Stay tuned …
All of us here at Charlane…myself, Rose Lane, Mike, Marc, Linda, Herman, Jacque, all the guides and others that pitch in here wish to say a big THANK YOU for your continued patronage. We all truly love what we do here, and it is our goal to do everything we can to make your visit with us the best experience possible. We also promise to all of our customers that we will do everything we can to better our hunts and all aspects of Charlane every season, constantly improving. Look for more news to come as we update the website.
